IS JESUS REALLY THE SON OF GOD?

Let’s Explore The Answer

One of the most foundational beliefs of Christianity is that Jesus is not simply human, but rather, divine. Christians believe that Jesus Christ is God, but also that He was the Son of God. This can be a bit confusing, so let’s dive into what this phrase — Son of God — really means.

What Skeptics & Atheists Say

Most atheists don’t deny the fact of Jesus’ existence since historical records provide ample evidence of a man named Jesus from Nazareth. What they do argue is that this man was not God any more than any other figure that came to earth claiming to be God.

Some skeptics say Jesus was a preacher and an influential religious leader, but nothing more than that. Others, who are critical of Christianity but may subscribe to a different faith system, believe he could have been a prophet or messenger of God, but certainly not God Himself, nor the Son of God.

What The Bible Says

The phrase “Son of God” actually comes from Luke 1:35, when an angel appears to Mary, Jesus’ mother, and tells her of the plan for her son’s miraculous birth and that He’ll be “called the Son of God.” That term is echoed throughout the New Testament, as in Matthew 16:16, when the disciple Peter says to Jesus, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God” or in John 5:25 when Jesus refers to Himself this way.

In fact, one of the most well-known Gospel passages takes place on a mountain, when a voice from above, accompanied by a bright cloud, says, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” So throughout the Bible, this idea of Jesus being God’s son is confirmed again and again. But what does this mean?

Christians believe that God is not just one person, but three. The Holy Trinity encompasses these three “Persons:” God the Father, God the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This notion of God as three members of a family is woven throughout the Bible and intended to reveal different aspects of God’s nature.

Christians see Jesus’ time on earth as displaying the ultimate Father-Son relationship; however, Jesus is believed to be fully God Himself, not “less than” God because He is the Son. This can be a challenging concept for our modern minds to grasp, but all three parts of God are equally important. Jesus was the only member of the Trinity to come to earth and live fully as a man, in order to make all believers in Him also considered children of God. The Bible says that those who believe in Jesus as the Son of God are themselves sons and daughters of God the Father.

What would happen if you embraced the possibility that the God of the Bible really did create the world and really does care for you?

Pascal’s Wager

In the seventeenth century, a famous philosopher and mathematician, Blaise Pascal, encouraged people to make a wager when it came to belief in God. If a person chose to believe in God and God did exist, that person would gain everything (eternal life). If a person chose to believe in God and God did not exist, that person would lose nothing. On the other hand, if a person chose not to believe in God and he was right, he would lose nothing. But if that person did not believe in God and he was wrong- he would lose everything (lose eternal life).

This wager can be said another way:

Based on this logic, Pascal suggested the rational person would choose to believe in God as believing offers a person everything (eternal life) while losing nothing. Wherever you are in your faith journey, would you consider taking Pascal’s wager? If the good God of the Bible exists, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain by believing in Him today.
