IS THE BIBLE LEGIT?

Let’s Explore The Answer

Is the Bible really the inspired word of God? Or is it just a collection of myths dreamed up by men?

One thing’s for sure: this is one remarkable piece of literature. Every year, people buy hundreds of millions of Bibles in more than 1,500 languages. These 6 books were written by 40 authors over 1,000 years. Yet the Bible tells one unified story, the story of Jesus Christ, from beginning to end. The Old Testament foretells his coming and the New Testament tells why he came.

Historical, scientific, and archaeological facts confirm the Bible’s truth. With astounding accuracy, it recounts the past and predicts the future

Why do skeptics and atheists disagree with the facts? And what does the Bible say about its own legitimacy?

What Skeptics & Atheists Say

Bible skeptics usually reject the claim that the Bible is the word of God. Convinced it was written by fallible humans in an uninformed, unenlightened age, they think it’s all wrong and even harmful. Presuming that no God exists, they are convinced the Bible’s a collection of mortal man’s legends. It’s historically inaccurate, they say, and full of inconsistencies.

Atheists say that Bible writers either erred or flat out lied when explaining the biblical examples of miracles such as the parting of a sea (Exodus 14:21-22); people walking on water (Matthew 14:26-29); and a virgin being impregnated by God (Matthew 1:20). And they simply can’t fathom that the God of the Bible could treat people so cruelly, especially the innocent ones.

Skeptics and atheists commonly dispute the Bible’s reliability and validity.

What The Bible Says

Jesus’s words validated his trust in the Old Testament. “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets,” he said (Matthew 5:17). And when he planted his feet upon the bedrock truth of God’s Word to refute Satan (Matthew 4:4), Jesus showed his high regard for its authority and power.

The apostle Peter emphasized the credibility of Scripture and of the gospel when he wrote, “For we did not follow cunningly devised fables when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of His majesty” (2 Peter 1:16). And these eyewitnesses wrote their accounts soon after the events happened. Peter also confirmed that God, not men, authored Scripture (2 Peter 1:20-21).

Those who received Paul’s letters understood that these messages came from God, not a human writer (1 Thessalonians 2:13). And those who wrote God’s messages were martyred for this. Why would they stake their lives on a fictional message?

The Bible has withstood the attempts of kings, dictators, and whole societies to abolish it, yet it remains the top-selling book of all time. Its words of hope, not found in any other religious writings, have transformed the lives of millions. The Bible resonates as truth in the deepest part of human souls (Ecclesiastes 3:11).

What would happen if you embraced the possibility that the God of the Bible really did create the world and really does care for you?

Pascal’s Wager

In the seventeenth century, a famous philosopher and mathematician, Blaise Pascal, encouraged people to make a wager when it came to belief in God. If a person chose to believe in God and God did exist, that person would gain everything (eternal life). If a person chose to believe in God and God did not exist, that person would lose nothing. On the other hand, if a person chose not to believe in God and he was right, he would lose nothing. But if that person did not believe in God and he was wrong- he would lose everything (lose eternal life).

This wager can be said another way:

Based on this logic, Pascal suggested the rational person would choose to believe in God as believing offers a person everything (eternal life) while losing nothing. Wherever you are in your faith journey, would you consider taking Pascal’s wager? If the good God of the Bible exists, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain by believing in Him today.
