WHY SHOULD I BELIEVE IN GOD?

Let’s Explore The Answer

As we watch the world unfold before us it’s easy to sometimes wonder, “Is someone in charge here?” As politicians bicker and countries battle, it can make us wonder if God even exists. And, if He does exist, should we believe in Him? What an amazing question!

You might identify as an atheist, agnostic, or somewhere in between. Maybe you’re someone who grew up believing in God but has grown skeptical through time. Or maybe you’re someone who’s always doubted, but something has brought you back to the question of God at this time. Wherever you are in your journey, it can be helpful to understand what skeptics and the Bible say about believing in God.

What Skeptics & Atheists Say

Those who don’t believe in God fall into a spectrum. On the one side are those who believe God doesn’t exist (atheists) and that all religion is simply manmade. On the other side are those who aren’t sure whether or not God exists (agnostics), and feel that whatever the case may be, he’s distant and potentially uncaring.

Skeptics and atheists emphasize our existence in the present world, dismissing the idea that anything happens to us after we die. They believe that humans are a miracle of time and change. They also might believe that manmade religion only causes division and wars. Skeptics and atheists might struggle with understanding how one being could control an entire universe, and they likely question whether or not any physical evidence points to God’s existence. Thanks to these questions, many people have chosen not to believe in God.

What The Bible Says

The Bible says, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands” (Psalm 19:1). From the mightiest mountain to the smallest cell, creation points to a creator. Our world is perfectly aligned within our solar system to sustain life. The perfect mix of water, oxygen, and heat makes the earth habitable for humans. Believing that cells, left to their own devices, would eventually create something as spectacular as our world is like placing all the pieces of a watch on a table and expecting that time alone would move the pieces to perfectly create a time-telling device.

The Bible also says that God set eternity in our hearts (Ecc. 3:11). It’s like there’s something written into our DNA that knows there must be something more to life than what we see. This feeling calls to us as we connect with the wonders of this world. What if this small voice was the voice of God Himself, letting you know you were made on purpose and for a purpose? The Bible says that you are important to God, important enough that He even has a plan for your life (Jer. 29:11).

Yes, people are imperfect and sometimes the church fails to show God’s great love for people, but this doesn’t necessarily mean that God doesn’t exist. It just reinforces the idea that every person, even church people, has issues and is in need of God’s transforming love.

What would happen if you embraced the possibility that the God of the Bible really did create the world and really does care for you?

Pascal’s Wager

In the seventeenth century, a famous philosopher and mathematician, Blaise Pascal, encouraged people to make a wager when it came to belief in God. If a person chose to believe in God and God did exist, that person would gain everything (eternal life). If a person chose to believe in God and God did not exist, that person would lose nothing. On the other hand, if a person chose not to believe in God and he was right, he would lose nothing. But if that person did not believe in God and he was wrong- he would lose everything (lose eternal life).

This wager can be said another way:

Based on this logic, Pascal suggested the rational person would choose to believe in God as believing offers a person everything (eternal life) while losing nothing. Wherever you are in your faith journey, would you consider taking Pascal’s wager? If the good God of the Bible exists, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain by believing in Him today.
